What are the top three failures of 91% of business websites online?

You may not realize it, but you and other businesses, though, you may have a web presence or may not (if you don't have a site you need a site now)...you really need to take a step back...

  • Are you spending money on SEO?
  • Are you spending money on pay per click?
  • Did you have a simple site set up without testing it? Or even a complex site that you never tested?

There are a lot of people out there to sell you website design and traffic packages, or maybe you hired a team that you thought would do the job for you. However, in many cases its become the blind leading the blind. Anyone can throw out some buzz terms:

quote

...You need to look at your site and make sure it is optimized and set up properly, so your users and potential customers understand who you are and what you have to offer, and then Take Action! When I say "action," I mean instead of leaving your site, a user does something, anything really, any action:

  • Clicks something, like a link
  • Joins your email list
  • Watches a video
  • Signs up for your site
  • Fills out a lead form
  • Buys a product or service

So, when I say words like "action rate," I mean how many visitors took action on your site rather than leaving your site. Most businesses have no clue what their visitors are doing on their site!

You can get traffic. You can send 1000 visitors a day, I could get 10,000 visitors that are targeted for your site tomorrow, but if when a user gets to your site, they don't know what to do, they don't know why or how you can help them, or they don't know how to contact you or buy from you, then you have a very large problem.

There are 3 things that your website needs to be effective at generating leads, calls, and sales...

So, what are the top three failure of most businesses online today...

Number one: Most businesses fail to communicate their message.

You have to communicate to your users what you want them to do and what action you want them to take on your site.

  • Do you want them to interact with content? Read an article, fill out a survey, go to your online shopping section...
  • Do you want them to buy something?
  • Do you want them to call in and schedule an appointment?

If so, you need to tell them, and you need to make it stand out. How many sites have you seen where there is no headline, not even a title, just some navigation, some content about the company, and maybe 1 semi-relevant image. If you don't think this matters...it does.

  • I have changed a headline and seen sales double
  • I have set up pages to sell a product and told the visitor what product they needed for their problem (instead of just having them browse around the site), and seen conversions 1400% higher than just generally sending them to your "shopping" section.
  • I have seen relevant video and audio to engage new visitors and increase action and response rates anywhere from 611-1203%

If someone walked into your office or store, or called your business or sales line, what would you say?

Then, you would point them in the right direction. You wouldn't have a generic or overly hyped description about how great you are. You would help them find what they need. You need to do the same online. Are you making any of these common mistakes on your website:

  • Does the site makes sense and is it easy-to-follow?
  • Do you engage the user? Or do you talk about yourself?
  • Do you have big images with no purpose? Or have you even thought about it?
  • Do you have too much content? Is there so much content in the visitors face they get overwhelmed?
  • Is what action you want the user to perform below the fold where they have to have to scroll down to see it. Unfortunately, if you are doing this you are losing your users and potential customers. 80% of site interaction happens above the fold. This is a horrible problem I see too often. I've seen sign ups for a site double when they didn't have to look for it.

Let me explain how this works in real life, in your business...

  • If you are a doctor, does your page talk about you or does it talk to the user. If you are a chiropractor what do you think would get the user's attention? Talking to them only about your credentials, sure you want to later show them your credentials and credibility, but that's not going to solve their problem. What about asking them if they have low back pain, ask them does your neck ache, do you have headaches, we can help, call here, or contact us, submit your e-mail for a free report.
  • You are in retail, and you are either not selling on your site, or you make it difficult to find products in your shopping section of your site, so users leave or don't purchase. I have gone to sites to buy a product from a company I already liked the product of, and I either cant find it on their site and give up, or see they don't even sell online.

Anyhow, you can see how crucial it is to call your user to the action you want them to perform, and keep it simple and focused.

So, what is the next mistake that most business sites are making...

Number two: Usability.

  • Is it easy for the user to interact with your site?
  • Does your site load slow? I've seen an action rate drop 91%
  • Do all the parts of your site function? I have clicked a link ready to buy something on a site and gotten an error page. How much revenue can be lost with an error like that...
  • Is it easy for users to get information on what they are looking for, buying the product they are looking for, contact you, or is it difficult?
  • Do people have to scroll down or left or right to find what they need?
  • Do they have to click multiple links just to get in touch with you or to find your phone number, contact e-mail, your product page?
  • Do you have all of the features that your site needs? Have a contact form and easy route to be contacted on your site. Don't just have an email for being contacted.
  • Does your site load in all browsers? 25% of users do not use Internet Explorer and that number is growing.
  • Does your site load on mobile phones? Over the last year, the mobile devices with touchscreens grew 159%, and that number will keep growing.

Let me give you a fail proof principle...

People don't want to have to do any more work than they have to. Make it easy for them, point them in the right direction, tell them where to go, and make it easy to do on your site. People get frustrated if they have to do a lot of looking around. A site with missing pages or that doesn't function properly is like a store or an office with a big hole in the wall. And the last huge area of failure...

Number Three: Site and User Interaction.

So, your site is up, it has some good enticing headlines and images, your site works properly, so, now if a user visits, what happens? Here are some key things you must be doing if you want your site to grow and be useful to your business.

  • Do you track where your visitors are coming from? You can't build on what gets visitors to your site if you don't know what it is
  • Do you know how long they stay on the page and what they are clicking on?
  • Do you have an e-mail opt in or newsletter that you can offer your users?
  • Do you have social buttons on your site so users can share, like, tweet, or e-mail your site? I saw a test where social buttons increased traffic 35% and it never dried up
  • Do you keep your site up to date with fresh content, fresh deals, fresh news, fresh email newsletter material? I have seen a site increase visits by 33% just by adding new content on a weekly basis to the site.

How does this look practically in people's real life businesses?

  • Emailing weekly promotions, coupons, or deals to your customers to sell something on your site.
  • Having a news section that you update regularly if you are a financial services firm, including some very useful information and tips
  • Creating a coupon for your service and promoting it to grow and sell on your social pages and website

I want to say it again...

This is why your site needs a specific marketing purpose. But most businesses have not gotten this far. It is your storefront, your receptionist, your sales team. And in fact, can be incredibly more automated than the parts of your offline business.

Your website is your way to tell the world what you do, how you can help your users, what product you have to offer, or what service you have to offer. You want to let them know that you can help them with their problem, need, or want. And if you engage them with opt ins, social pages, mobile pages, you can be in front of your customers and prospects more often than before.

Now, I don't want to leave you hanging dry to figure out the next step. I can't help everyone, but if you fill out the form below, for a limited amount of business owners like yourself, I'm offering a 100% free consultation on your site.
